A Guide to Erectile Aids and Devices

For men with Erectile Dysfunction (ED), medication is not the only option. Mechanical devices like Vacuum Erection Devices (VEDs) and constriction rings can be effective, non-invasive tools for achieving and maintaining an erection.

Vacuum Erection Devices (VEDs)

A VED, sometimes called a penis pump, consists of a plastic cylinder, a pump (manual or battery-powered), and a constriction ring.

How it Works:

  1. A water-based lubricant is applied to the base of the penis.
  2. The cylinder is placed over the penis, creating a seal against the body.
  3. The pump is used to create a vacuum inside the cylinder. This vacuum draws blood into the penis, causing it to become erect.
  4. Once the penis is erect, a constriction ring is slid from the base of the cylinder to the base of the penis to trap the blood and maintain the erection. The cylinder is then removed.

VEDs are particularly important in penile rehabilitation after prostate surgery to maintain tissue health.

Pros:

  • Effective for many men, regardless of the cause of ED.
  • Non-invasive and can be used on-demand.
  • Lower one-time cost compared to ongoing medication.

Cons:

  • Can be cumbersome and requires a lack of spontaneity.
  • The erection may feel cold or look purplish.
  • Can cause bruising or discomfort if used improperly.

Constriction Rings (Cock Rings)

A constriction ring is a simple ring made of silicone, rubber, or leather that is placed at the base of the erect penis. Its purpose is to help maintain an erection by preventing blood from flowing back out of the penis.

How it Works:

The ring is applied after an erection has been achieved (either naturally or with medication/a VED). It should be tight enough to be effective but not so tight that it causes pain. **Crucially, a constriction ring should never be left on for more than 30 minutes** to avoid tissue damage.

Pros:

  • Simple, inexpensive, and widely available.
  • Can improve the firmness and duration of an erection.
  • Can be used in combination with other treatments like oral medications.

Cons:

  • Does not help create an erection, only maintain one.
  • Can be uncomfortable if sized incorrectly.
  • Risk of serious injury if left on for too long.

Consult with a Specialist

While these devices are available over-the-counter, it's best to discuss their use with a men's health specialist. We can provide guidance on proper use, sizing, and help you integrate them into a comprehensive treatment plan.
