Understanding Gonorrhea ("The Clap")

Gonorrhea is a common bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) that can infect both men and women. In men, it most often affects the urethra, rectum, or throat. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential to cure the infection and prevent serious complications.

Symptoms of Gonorrhea in Men

Symptoms usually appear within a week of infection, although some men may have no symptoms at all. When they do occur, symptoms can include:

  • A burning sensation or pain when urinating.
  • A discharge from the penis, which may be white, yellow, or green.
  • Painful or swollen testicles (less common).
  • If the infection is in the rectum, it may cause anal itching, discharge, or pain during bowel movements.
  • A sore throat (for oral gonorrhea).

The Importance of Treatment

If left untreated, gonorrhea can lead to serious health problems. The infection can spread to the epididymis, causing a painful condition (epididymitis) that can, in rare cases, affect fertility. More seriously, the infection can spread through the bloodstream to other parts of the body (disseminated gonococcal infection), causing joint pain, rashes, and fever.

Testing and Diagnosis

Testing for gonorrhea is straightforward. It usually involves one of the following:

  • Urine Test: A simple urine sample can detect the bacteria.
  • Swab Test: A healthcare provider may use a swab to take a sample from the urethra, rectum, or throat, depending on your sexual history.

Treatment for Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is treated with antibiotics. Due to the rise of antibiotic-resistant strains, treatment usually involves an injection of one antibiotic (ceftriaxone) and an oral tablet of another (azithromycin). It is critical to take all medication as prescribed and to avoid sexual contact for at least 7 days after treatment is complete.

It is also crucial that all recent sexual partners are notified so they can be tested and treated. This prevents reinfection and stops the spread of the infection.

Don't Delay, Get Tested

If you have symptoms or believe you may have been exposed to gonorrhea, confidential testing is the responsible first step to protecting your health and the health of your partners.
