A Compassionate Approach to Male Infertility
Infertility can be a stressful and emotional journey for a couple. Approximately one-third of infertility cases are due to male factors. Our clinic provides a scientific and supportive environment to evaluate male fertility and identify potential treatable causes.
The Male Infertility Evaluation
The goal of the evaluation is to identify any underlying issues that may be affecting sperm production, function, or delivery. The investigation is a systematic process:
1. Semen Analysis
This is the cornerstone of the male fertility evaluation. A semen sample is analyzed in a lab to assess several key parameters:
- Sperm Count (Concentration): The number of sperm per milliliter of semen.
- Motility: The percentage of sperm that are moving, and how well they move.
- Morphology: The percentage of sperm that have a normal shape.
- Volume and other parameters: The total volume of the ejaculate, its pH, and color.
Abnormal results in any of these areas can point towards a potential issue.
2. Hormonal Evaluation
Sperm production is a hormonally-driven process. Our Full Male Hormone Panel is often recommended to check for imbalances. Hormones like Testosterone, FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone), and LH (Luteinizing Hormone) are critical for healthy sperm production.
3. Physical Examination
A physical exam by our specialist can identify anatomical issues such as a varicocele (enlarged veins in the scrotum), which is a common and treatable cause of male infertility, or blockages in the reproductive tract.
4. Lifestyle and Medical History Review
Factors like diet, exercise, smoking, alcohol use, medication history, and exposure to toxins can all impact fertility. A thorough review helps identify modifiable risk factors.
Treatment and Next Steps
Once the evaluation is complete, we can determine the next steps. In many cases, fertility can be improved by addressing an underlying medical condition (like treating a varicocele or balancing hormones), making lifestyle changes, or using assisted reproductive technologies in coordination with a fertility clinic.
