Understanding Trichomoniasis
Trichomoniasis (often called "trich") is a very common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a tiny parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. While it's more common in women, men can also get infected and can spread the parasite to their partners.
Symptoms of Trichomoniasis in Men
Most men with trichomoniasis have no symptoms. However, when symptoms do occur, they can include:
- Itching or irritation inside the penis.
- A thin, whitish discharge from the penis.
- Pain or burning during urination or after ejaculation.
Because symptoms are often absent, many men don't know they are infected and can unknowingly pass the parasite to their partners.
Complications
While less common in men, untreated trichomoniasis can lead to inflammation of the urethra (urethritis) or the prostate gland (prostatitis). Having trichomoniasis can also make it easier to get or spread other STIs, including HIV.
Testing and Diagnosis
Testing for trichomoniasis is simple. It can be diagnosed by:
- Looking at a sample of urine or discharge under a microscope.
- A rapid antigen test or a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) on a urine or swab sample, which is the most accurate method.
Simple and Effective Treatment
Trichomoniasis is easily cured with a single dose of an oral antibiotic, usually metronidazole or tinidazole. It is important that you do not drink alcohol for 24-72 hours after taking the medication, as it can cause a severe reaction.
To prevent reinfection, you should abstain from sex until you and your partner(s) have completed treatment and any symptoms are gone. It is crucial that all of your recent sexual partners are also treated, even if they don't have symptoms.
Easy to Test, Easy to Treat
If you have any symptoms or think you might have been exposed, don't hesitate to get tested. A simple test and a single dose of medication can cure the infection and protect you and your partners.
