A Fresh Start for Damaged or Infected Nails.
When a toenail is severely damaged, chronically infected, or causing persistent pain, a partial or full nail removal (avulsion) is a safe and highly effective procedure. It provides immediate relief and allows the body to heal, often paving the way for a healthier nail to grow in its place.
When is Nail Removal Recommended?
Our podiatry specialist may recommend this procedure for several reasons:
- Severe or Recurring Ingrown Toenails: For nails that are deeply ingrown or repeatedly cause problems, removing the offending border provides a definitive solution.
- Severe Fungal Infections: In cases where a fungal infection has completely destroyed the nail, removing it can allow for more direct and effective treatment of the nail bed underneath.
- Trauma to the Nail: If a nail has been crushed or lifted from the nail bed by an injury, removing it can relieve pain from the pressure of blood underneath (subungual hematoma) and allow for proper healing.
- Thickened, Painful Nails: When a nail is so thick that it causes pain and cannot be managed with debridement alone.
The Procedure: What to Expect
We understand that the idea of nail surgery can be intimidating, but the reality is a simple, quick, and painless in-office procedure.
- Anesthesia: The process begins with a local anesthetic injection at the base of the toe. This completely numbs the area, ensuring you feel no pain during the procedure.
- The Removal: The specialist will then carefully separate the nail plate from the nail bed and remove either a small portion (for ingrowns) or the entire nail, depending on the situation.
- Dressing: After the removal, the area is cleaned with an antiseptic and a sterile dressing is applied.
The entire process typically takes about 20-30 minutes. We will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to ensure the area heals quickly and without complications.
